On a hill, 500 meters above sea level, overlooking olive tree orchards, the beautiful vineyard of the Antico Borgo di Sugame faces south, toward the spectacular sunsets of the Greve valley. Here in the heart of Chianti Classico, this vineyard has existed since 1200 AD, sandwiched between the hills surrounding the valleys of Greve and d'Arno.

This is a particularly bucolic corner of Italy -- vineyards give way to olive orchards which in turn give way to ancient forests.  The Sugame vineyard spans 5 hectares of calcareous sandy soil with ribbons of clay. The single vineyard vines have an average age of 30 years, the oldest of which are still pruned in accordance with the traditions of the region.  Sugame is a place where tradition reigns.  The old ways of Chianti Classico are all carefully observed here.  Today’s trends of planting international varietals and using new oak are eschewed by winemaker Lorenzo who prefers to follow the wisdom of the great winemakers who came before him – dedicating his work to the noble grape of the region: Sangiovese.

All of Sugame’s wines are organic and undergo minimal manipulation to allow for the fullest expression of terroir.  The Chianti Classico and Chianti Classico Riserva (both 100% Sangiovese) are fermented in steel tanks and aged in old Slovenian oak barrels. No additives are used during the fermentation process.  The winemaking process is one characterized by the lightest of touches and a reverence for the fruit.
